John & Sandra Expedition to OZ,NZ, Fiji Thailand & Singapore travel blog

Most of the Sounds are only accesible via a boat or on foot, but there is the odd scenic driver along the edge of part of the Sounds.

We decided to take the drive along Queen Charlotte Sound and round to Robin Hood Bay and Cloudy Bay (yep, its a real place!) and in to Rararangi. it is about a 45km drive (as opposed to 18 on the main roads). Most of the journey is on unsealed roads, with literally hundreds of tight bends and the odd logging truck !!!!!.

Despite the driving "hazards" - it is a superb drive with great views over the Sounds and opening out to a fantastic aerial view of the long sweeping Cloudy Bay. To be very British about the whole thing, we took a flask of tea to drink sitting at Robin Hoods Bay!.

A very chilled day in Picton - it has been a very relaxing and varied stay here. We will be sorry to be moving on tomorrow - but we do have Kaikoura to look forward to!
