Kevin and Anne at their home in Warrnambool

A view of the Grampian Mountains as we drive towards the Grampians...

Kangaroos outside the restaurant

Thursday February 5

This morning we left Warrnambool after three very hospitable days with Kevin and Anne. We started heading west along the coast road towards Portland and Mount Gambier, but soon decided to head up to the Grampians National Park. This was Heather’s suggestion as she has a definite preference for hills and mountains.

We stopped briefly in Heywood and continued on to Hall’s Gap, the tourist centre of the National Park. The Grampians (known as the Gariwerd to Aboriginal peoples) are a series of very scenic rugged mountains within a 168,000 hectare park. The mountains have significant cultural heritage for Aboriginal people.

For accommodations, we inquired at the tourist information centre with three features in the accommodation that we wanted for our three night stay: air conditioning (because it is going to be over 40 degrees Celsius on Saturday); a fridge (so we can keep our food and drinks cool) and an indoor pool (so we can cool down after our morning hikes).

We found all that we wanted at the Pinnacle Holiday Lodge where we rented a self-catering room. No cooking tonight though. Our pizza and beer dinner at the Black Panther Restaurant was enjoyed only a short hop and a step away from our lodgings. After a hot day in the car, the pizza and a couple of beers went down very well. After dinner, we found three kangaroos munching the grass right outside the restaurant, and a flock of yellow-crested cockatoos were flying around the trees (very noisy birds but nice to see).
