Everyone (except me) was going stir-crazy in Carmelo. The Four Seasons was the most beautiful place I´ve ever stayed (rooms, grounds, common areas, pool, etc.) and the service was unprecedented (they cleaned our room twice per day, put bookmarks in our books there the pages were folded down, and made picture frames for our photos), BUT it was so isolated that there was not much to do but hang by the pool and read and relax....my kind of vacation, especially before a 13 day jaunt around Brazil in buses in hostels.
We did manage to find some activities: Lynn and I had massages at the spa, toured Colonia, and also visited a small farm where they raise cows and make dulce de leche, milk, butter, and cheese; Mel and Bob and Steve rode horses; Bob and Steve and Lynn biked around the countryside; in addition to the great food we had at the hotel and pool we had great meals off site including homemade pasta on Gnocchi day at a restaurant called Narbona; Bob and Lynn and Mel golfed; we all toured a winery, visited a lemon farm for dinner and went into the town of Carmelo for some semi-decent lunch. We were supposed to learn to play Polo too, but it rained for the last couple of days.
I tried to get Bob to leave me in Carmelo and swing back through on his way to Chicago to meet up with me again, but he didn´t go for it. Could have been the $500+ a night rooms, $60+ lunches, and $500+ rounds of golf. Meanie.
