Having had good luck renting a car in Plovdiv, we rented another one in Veliko and took a recommended drive to three little towns in the area. After watching Gavin navigate the roads in Africa, driving in Bulgaria is a piece of cake. The roads are paved and we only had to avoid livestock once! We first visited a cave in which remains of Neanderthal man have been found, along with cave bears over nine feet long. The hike around the area was lovely with waterfalls and running stream. Our next stop was the Etar Open Air Museum, a collection of houses and workshops around 150-200 years old, with artisans working to produce lovely ceramics and woodcarvings. Becoming enchanted with the elaborate carvings, we carried on to Tryavna, the heart of the wood carving community. Wooden works of art adorned adorable little houses along cobbled streets. A wealthy woodcarver’s home has been turned into a museum, and has a lovely story to it. The woodcarver and his apprentice were in a contest, in which they each worked in secret on the ceiling of the master carver’s home. After six months the ceilings were unveiled, and the townspeople decided that the apprentice was the winner. You be the judge!
