Zambia – South Luangwa National Park 15th October
Morning game drive (2hours) followed by 2 hour game walk animals spotted: Ground Hornbill, Puku, Water Buck, Nile Crocodiles, Bee Eaters, Love Birds, Eagle Owl, Saddled Billed Stalk, Thorncroft Giraffe, Hippo, Zebra, Bald Vulture no lions or the elusive leopard.
Evening/night drive – we are told about the collective names of animals: Dazzle of Zebra, Tower of Giraffe, Raft of Hippos, Abstinence of Buffalo, Leap of Leopard to name a few that I hadn’t heard of before. As night fell we noticed a dazzle of lights (not zebra) in the distance our driver was off, foot to the floor. It soon became clear that something was worth all this commotion it turned out to be a leopard and her cub. It was absolutely amazing to see but the crazy driving and ‘paparazzi’ made it feel that we were harassing them as the mother got separated from her cub by the numerous vehicles fighting for the best spot to get a picture. After our driver nearly reversed into another on coming jeep I was pleased to leave the Leopards alone. It wasn’t long before we caught up with another dazzle of lights this time for a large male lion that was strolling along the roadside. As I leant out of the side of the open top safari jeep, less than 1m away from the lion it dawned on me that it was probably not the safest thing to do but I did get a good photo?!
