Shirt Sleeves

The Castle

Tasting

After enjoying our wine tour in B.C’s Okanagan last October, we looked forward to repeating the experience in the Napa Valley north of San Francisco. The vineyards stretch for miles and miles in the area. We discovered that this tour would be very different from our Okanagan experience at the first winery we stopped at. While wine tastings were free at most of the Okanagan wineries and the average cost per bottle of wine was about $20 Cdn, the wine tasting at the Black Stallion Winery was quoted at $15 US and the average price per bottle was $40 US. We decided to have our first tasting for the day a little further down the road.

Our stop at the Hagafen Winery was more pleasant. The fee for tasting was only $5 which would be waived with any purchase of their product. We did enjoy one of their whites and so brought a bottle and a complimentary wine glass home with us.

Part of our enjoyment of the day was seeing the architecture used on the numerous wineries. One of the most outstanding was the Castello di Amorosa, built like a castle complete with turrets, a moat and the dungeons. This winery had been used during the shooting of the recently released movie “Bedtime Stories”.

We were quite thrilled to have the outside temperature hit 20 degrees Celsius while on our drive. It was great to be in short sleeves for a change!
