Sand dunes

We took a boat to Tutoia through the delta do Parnaiba. There were six of us, Tom and Nadine, us and two french guys who were working in french guyana. It was a nice journey, with hammocks slung across the boat. The scenery was good but didn't change much. We were met by a truck at Tutoia which the french guys had booked, and we took this to Cabure where we were planning on staying. However the Pousada (do Paulo) there was horrible and they wanted R$50. We decided to take a motor boat across to Atins, a smaller town. After checking out the pousada rancho dos Lencois which looked lovely, but was full, we ended up in dormitorio Rita, which was cheap and basic (R$20 with bathroom and mosquito net) but was fine.

The next morning we headed to the Pousada Rancho and they were very helpful. They arrange tours and boats up to Barreirinhas. We took a truck into the national park dos Lencois Maranheses and started on a walk through the sand dunes. We saw some green parrots flying out of the trees in front of us. The track soon turned to marshy land and we then preceded to walk through marsh water that came up to our necks ! Not a particularly pleasant experience as there was horse shit in the water floating around ! When we got to the 'Paradise'lagoon we were not too impressed, it was a nice place but maybe not worth the effort !

We trekked back through the marsh lands and had to push start the truck as it was having engine problems. After a bite to eat and a shower to remove the remaining brown stains from our feet !!! we took the motor boat to Barreirenhas. The journey was lovely and we saw an amazing moon rising (it was a full moon and bright orange !).
