On Dec 22nd we flew over to East Timor with some of Adam’s co-workers on a tiny plane used for employees or military only.
We arrived at his hotel(more like a compound) at noon. He had to start work asap, so he took me to the place where he works. It is in the same base as the Australian Army. Lots of military stuff everywhere.
On the 23rd, I went for a ride in a helicopter to deliver beer to the other soldiers, in another part of East Timor, as a Christmas gift. We flew about 20min to the other side of the Island and dropped it off, along with four other Aussie soldiers. They were super nice.
Once you are away from the dirty, over populated city, the landscape is beautiful. During my helicopter ride, the pilot informed me that East Timor is one of Starbucks main suppliers for their coffee, and you can see that most hill sides are covered with coffee plants. In the pictures, you see these large trees, and they cover the coffee plants for shade. So you may not be able to see the coffee plants so well.
Later that day, we rented bikes and rode all the way from town to the Jesus statue. We then hiked all the way up to the statue and took in the views.
We went to the markets on Christmas eve and I could not handle the smells and pollution. We lasted 20min. I think we were the only white people. Couple times when kids see us they call out in Timor and point. They say, “malya” which means while people.
