Port Arthur

Tesselated Pavement

JOSH: Today I went to Port Arthur Historic Site. The convicts worked from dawn to dusk. … First we went on a tour. It wasn’t long – there was only 3 stops. The tour guide showed us some trees that were planted for memorial (WWI). There was an island called Isle of the Dead. Everywhere you walked was dead bodies. We didn’t go on the Isle of the Dead 3000 people on 1 little island. It was disgusting. We didn’t want to step foot on the island!

ANG: On the way to Port Arthur we bought (and started chomping into) some lovely cherries.

We also stopped at a place called EagleHawk Nest where there was a really interesting natural phenomenon called Tesselated Paving on the shoreline. It basically looked like big cobblestone paving. I started reading how it was formed, but it was drizzly and chilly and I wasn't really that interested - sort of like at Scitech - I am more interested in what happens than why.

Around there the land becomes almost an island cut off from Tasmania - joined only by a small line of land. To stop any escape attempts they put sentries here, but with wind and waves they found it hard to detect escapees, so they supplemented their surveillance with a line of wild dogs who were sure to alert them should anyone come near - or have a good chew on any escapees who tried to get really near.

We then went onto Port Arthur. I found it difficult to focus on the supposed main reason for being there. I found myself quite anxious, looking around, wondering, and not at all comfortable. We did it, but I was glad when we left.
