Cruising the USA 2008 - Trip of a lifetime! travel blog

Lunch along 299. Can't get any better.

After seeing all these beautiful trees in the Redwoods our plan was to head south towards Sacramento along the coast. However, just before we left we got a call from our new old friends Buck and Joy. They were in Redding, which was kind or our direction but inlands. We convinced them to stay another day and we changed our plans heading to Redding. We took 299, which is a beautiful scenic drive but very winding, steep passes and slow. It took us about 7 hours for 200 mls but well worth it. About half way, the stupid Engine light went on again. We were hoping it was fixed after Oregon, but obviously it had a mind of his own. In addition, the Stop Engine Warning light came on as well and our coach lost considerably on power. While I was taking those lights kind of easy during the trip, they started p... me really off now. And with the loss of power, we made it about 20mls/hr uphill. Thats suck. To our favor, there was a Cummins Service Station in Redding which was our first Stop. Those people were very helpful and took us in immediately. After checking everything out for an hour with no signs on the computer of anything wrong, we decided to come back in the morning to take a drive with one of the mechanics. We met up with our friends and had a great time again and back to the Cummins Dealer in the morning. We drove for about an hours or so without any incidence, what we call the showing effect. However, the mechanic was willing to hook the coach up to their computer one more time and it was worth it. Not 2 minutes later, the light went on and the engine made this stupid dull sound again. This time it stayed on and the computer showed what I had expected all along. The actuator for the turbo charger was stuck and to our total disbelieve they had one in stock. So we left the coach there for the day and they replaced it. Runs better than ever and the gas millage went from 5 to 7 m/g.

We had two more fantastic days with our friends. Rose made her famous potato salad (for which Buck would die for and me, too) and some real German Schnitzel. Not to mention, no left overs.

We had rain and a storm here pretty much the first time of our Trip but it was only for a day.

We left Redding with a fixed coach heading to Wilton California, near Sacramento.
