Duane & Jo's U.S. and Canada Tour: 2008 travel blog

We had a spaceous campsite at Catalina State Park.

The rocky mountains gave us a beautiful setting.

The clouds added to the beauty.

Saguaro Cactus

Rain on the way.

Our campground in Tucson was in the high desert, up against the Catalina Mountains, in Oro Valley. I usually associate flat land and brown dirt with deserts but the area around Tucson is truly beautiful. We were surprised by how green it was, with a variety of plants. The Oro Valley is a newly developed community but the campground felt miles away from the amenities that were close by. We spent Wed. checking out the area and getting food for our “minimal effort” Thanksgiving dinner. Thunderstorms moved into the area Wed. night and remained through Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day we went to Saguaro National Park. The saguaro cactus is found only in southwest AZ, along the Colorado River in the southeast corner of CA, and northern Mexico. The park is in the foothills, with a “forest” of saguaros, teddy bear cholla cactus, and many other impressive plant species. The weather limited our exploring abilities, we hope to come back to this area in the future and spend more time. We missed not being able to get together with family for the holiday but feel thankful we are able to be on this wonderful trip. It's also great to have Rachael & Allen back safely from their Dubai trip.
