Geoff and Melissa's World Trip travel blog

We left Swakopmund early on Tuesday as it was a fair drive down to Sersriem. We stopped in a small town called Solitaire which was great as the local shop made the most yummy apple pie! We visited a canyon in the evening and watched the sunset over the dunes. It was a chilled evening as it was an early start the next day... Wednesday started at 445am when we were in the truck by 5am ready to travel 45km to ‘Dune 45’ for sunrise which was 125m high. It was a tough walk up as it was freezing and really steep in the sand but it was worth the walk as the sunrise was just stunning!! The walk back down was a giggle – we went down the steep way in the deep sand, it was great fun! Back at the truck Zak and Amy had a great breakfast ready for us, French toast and baked beans, what a treat!! After breakfast we headed off to meet our local Namibian guide who took us on a desert walk. It was really interesting to learn about the dunes and how they were formed. We also were told about the changing weather patterns and how areas ended up dry with dead trees that were 900 years old. All very interesting. We also were shown lizards, spiders and beetles that borrowed in the sand. Once back at the campsite we had a quick lunch and were packed up and ready to go by 1-30pm and headed off to get to another random campsite towards the SA border.

Because we had made good time the day before we had a nice sleep in on Thursday and left at 8-30am bound for Fish River Canyon. We arrived at the campsite at lunchtime and after a chilled afternoon we headed to the canyon for a look around. It was stunning! The second biggest in the world, Fish River Canyon is 160km long and 25km wide in parts. We enjoyed a 1.5km walk along part of it to a great viewpoint where Zak and Amy were waiting with drinks and dinner before we watched the lovely sunset. The evening was spent around the campfire enjoying a few drinks – only 2 more nights before we get to Cape Town!!

On Friday we left at 7-30am and in was a straight forward 180km drive to the South Africa border. We were at the border by 10-45am and after crossing over it was a mere 10 minute drive to the campsite ‘Fiddler’s Campsite’ right on the Orange River which was beautiful. After lunch Geoff and a few other headed out for a canoe down the river while the rest of us enjoyed a chilled afternoon where I caught up on the blog!! 2 nights to go in the tent – it is flying by now!
