Today, we drove out into the desert along a dry river bed for about 9 miles. We were looking for pottery shards from where the Apaches used to live. There was a spring, and they used to come to it to get water. Sometimes they would drop the pot, and, wala- we found the pieces. It was really neat, and Sue said she could just sit there and look for pieces. But, we only stayed a couple hours. We had a picnic lunch, then headed to Fort Craig.
Fort Craig was a post that was established during the Civil War. It is where the Battle of Valverde was fought. It is just ruins now. It makes you wonder why nothing was done with it after the war, because it has been a popular route from Mexico since the 1500's. It is so neat to stand and look out over the landscape, and know that it is the same thing that people saw over 500 years ago. Spooky.
