San Angelo, TX was our stop on the way to Carlsbad, NM. Imagine our surprise, to find San Angelo (pop. 88,000) to be a very nice place to stay. It is in the center of Texas, surrounded by ranches. It is a city that has a lot of civic pride and has done a nice job developing its downtown area. It has a very nice visitor center along the Concho River, and a nicely restored historic area. At one time it was the wool capitol of the world, today there are decorated sheep statues set around town, each with its own theme, to commemorate that past industry.
