Elephant Butte Lake- Where we are camped

A grave in Chloride

Coming down from graveyard

On Monday, we took a trip back in time. We went to Chloride, N.M. It is a ghost town, 34 miles into the mountains.

It was a beautiful ride thru the mountains, on windy roads, that many slowed us to 5 miles per hour. I am sorry if you get sick of the word beautiful, but it is the easiest way to describe it.

When we pulled into Chloride, I felt like I should be getting off a horse, instead of out of a car. It was like a Twilight Zone show. Transported back to 1880. I won't get into detail, but if you are interested, I will tell you when we get home.

One very interesting thing was, we went to the town cemetary. It was on top of a very tall mountain, with a very rough road on the side of the mountain. The HHR handled it, with only SOME sliding on the loose gravel. Some of the graves were from 1840, and some said, "killed by indians:. It was a humbling experience. Then, back down the mountain. Yikes!!!

Today (Tues.) we went to the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Huge place, with literally thousands of migrating birds. We went with Peter and Judy, some people we have met here.
