The Windmill in Bavarian-town Solvang, CA

Coveted houses on the sand in Malibu

The girls want to see what sleeping in the truck is like!

Day 36 (Tue, Oct 14)

We were all parting ways early as Tony and True and Dolly and Dave needed to get back to San Diego area and it was a long drive. Exchanged emails and I know we'll all be in touch. What a great bunch. Stopped to get a HUGE cinnamon roll and coffee at Pismo's Old West Cinnamon Rolls and More and we continued south down US 1 toward John's dad's house in Los Angeles. Went inland in Santa Barbara county to visit Bavarian town Solvang and Buellton, which are home to the wineries made famous in the movie “Sideways”. Tony said if we'd had time you can even find the “Sideways” winery tour on the internet. We did take pics of the Hitching Post restaurant and the Windmill Inn made famous by the film. I love that kind of stuff....Got through pretty Santa Barbara and saw what must have been the entry gates to the compounds of many movies stars in Malibu – but that's about all you can see from the main road. That and hundreds of actually pretty modest homes right ON the SAND on stilts with the ocean coming underneath. These would rent for around $75,000 per month and sell for $5 million plus. Passed Pepperdine University overlooking the ocean and landed around 2 pm at Will Rodgers State Beach in Santa Monica. Low 80's and sun is a good way to feel like a beach bum for a day so we donned our bathing suits, grabbed some delicacies at Ralph's groceries for lunch and planted ourselves on the beach for a hour.

Checked in with John's dad Carl and his wife Lita who suggested we beat rush hour which starts at 3 pm in LA and head to their house. Saw the Santa Monica pier and its ferris wheel and roller coaster and thanks to some beach time, already getting in the slow and easy LA groove. Made it to their house in town of Lakewood near Long Beach, CA in about and hour and a half. So excited to spend some time with the family for a few days in their home. Went out to dinner at their favorite Panda Inn (kind of like PF Changs) and came back and crashed....
