Mitchell, SD is a fun stop to see the Corn Palace. To boost town growth in 1892 the founding fathers constructed the first Corn Palace. It was enlarged 1905 and rebuilt in 1921 to accommodate new building codes. It has huge, colorful murals on its sides, which are redesigned every year. The murals are made entirely of native grains. It is highlighted by multi-colored corn that is grown within a few miles of the city limits. The Corn Palace has been referred to as the world’s largest bird feeder! The center can pack in over 3,000 basketball fans in the fall.
