We had a shopping day and we visited Fort Kearney, Great Platte River Road Archway, and the Kool-Aid Museum in the Hastings Museum while we were staying in Doniphan, Nebraska. It was 55˚, very windy, mostly sunny, and 9:42 am when we left the Grand Island KOA. After 3 sharp turns we on our way on S B Road. We merged onto I-80 East. At Exit 353 we turned left onto US 81 north. At Exit 353 we stopped for diesel a few miles south of York. We were pleased we had gotten 8.5 mpg at $3.86 a gallon. As we drove through Norfolk, Nebraska we saw a sign telling that it was the hometown of Johnny Carson. He was born in Corning, Iowa but grew-up in Norfolk. We followed a farm hopper for about 25 miles. We found it interesting that he didn’t have to have a license, brake lights, or flashing warning lights. The hopper was too wide for the road so it needed to be driven partially on the shoulder when any traffic came toward it. When this wasn't happening, the driver would come fully back onto the road. Because of the shoot that was on the roadside, Rick had a hard time seeing around it to pass it on the 2-lane highway. Finally he found a spot where he could pass. On this highway we crossed over the Missouri River and entered South Dakota, our 44th state. In Yankton, South Dakota we went down the Tom Brokaw Boulevard. He certainly had tried the night before to follow the agreed upon rules for the Presidential Debate. He and his wife were born and raised in Yankton. While we were stopped at a construction site I took pictures of a sorghum field. The roads again became quite awful! We could feel every expansion joint plus the pavement was uneven. The microwave really shook! I had to keep rearranging the towels to make it thicker under the support boards that were holding it up. We followed US 81 north all of the way to Camp America in Salem, South Dakota. Four miles before Salem we went over I-90. We felt so close, yet so far away, from Washington State! The skies were mostly clear, and it was windy and 69˚ when we arrived at 2:32 pm. We had driven 253 miles. It was nice to again not have any turn arounds! When I pulled out the supports for the microwave, the top wooden frame fell off. Rick needed to replug the 50-amp cord back in that was located in the bay for us to have electricity. The very rough roads caused these 2 problems. After a few attempts MotoSat locked on. We were in a nice and quiet park with pretty trees and their colorful leaves. They had about 50 sites with only 4 of us staying there. We continue to work on places to stay in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. So many were already closed!!! It was already snowing in Wyoming!!! Before going to bed I put ammonia down our sinks to get rid of the gnats. The directions said to let it sit all night in the drains.
