Snow Fight!

damn to tall :(

Today at 11am, we headed off on the long 700km trip to Durban. The Highways here are mostly dead straight with the occasional parts that weave in and out of valleys. The “speed limit” is 120km/hr. Cops are everywhere but they cant do anything to you so you can do what ever you want past them but it’s the traffic control that you have to watch out for and you barely ever see them so its basically what ever speed you feel you want to go at.

After about 4hrs of Ruan driving through drizzly rain it was my turn.

driving in the rain
The road started heading up into the mountains near Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal Border the rain soon turned into snow.

first glimps of snow

This was so exciting for everyone so of course we searched for a nice patch of snow by the side of the road. We had a small snowball fight on the edge of the road which was so much fun and we got a chance to stretch our legs. As the road continued the snow became thicker and thicker before only the roads were visible. We found another safe place to pull over and make snow angels and have another excellent snowball fight. With snow this thick and the proceedings were very slow from here as every so often patches of snow would appear on the road. We heard on the radio that earlier today the roads had been closed due to the snow so we were very lucky that we had an open and clear road. After an extreamly eventful day of driving, filled with the sights of 2 two car accidents, 4 cars rolled on their rooves (a Bakkie(Ute), Ambulance, sedan and another sedan flip in the air 2 cars in front of us and the driver (only person in the car) get up and walk away! Luckily it was a 4 lane highway at the time; we could safely assume he was drunk as lots of alcohol lay on the ground around the car) we arrived safely in Durban at 9:30pm we walked into the door of the backpackers (Tekweni Backpackers Hostel) and got the biggest shock to find 5 other Gappers on holidays as well jumping on us. After a couple of hours of catching up we went out for a few drinks at a bar just down the road. Overnight our car got broken into, they got in by smashing the back corner window, they got away with very little as we had most of our stuff in the dorms with us. the most expensive thing was Ruans camera. We stayed 2 nights in Durban before we decided to move on down the coast.
