The first real damage we saw from hurricane Ike was near Beaumont Tx. There were some areas with lots of downed trees, but as we came closer to Houston we saw more and more wind damage...most all of the billboards were either damaged or destroyed. Then as we drove thru Houston we saw the buildings with plywood in the windows...The most obvious sign of damage, tho, was watching the "convoys" of power and construction trucks traveling the interstate together. We saw several hundred trucks...and at our rv park in Montgomery, I was walking the dogs Monday morning, and counted 21 trucks pulling out together from our park alone...Rj had talked to some neighbors in the park, and we knew that many of the workers were staying there.
We got into Montgomery Saturday and that evening drove over to April Sound, a lovely gated community right on Lake Conroe. My oldest friend, Mush, (from second grade..Catholic school!) had us over for dinner. I hadn't seen her since sometime in the 70's. We had a great time, dinner and gabbing, and then met Mush and her son Marc for golf at their golf course the next day...RJ and Marc played, Mush and I mostly gabbed some more, catching up on over thirty years!!! Then off to dinner at a restaurant right out on the lake....lovely evening, great weather, and then they came back for a quick tour of the rv. That was it, and off we went the next morning for Oklahoma and points north...and west!
