We have had an incredible week in Niagara Fall! There have been many breathtaking moments. It's hard to describe in words how beautiful the falls and this area are. It is just the most awesome thing to see all of the water and the power of the falls. We purchased a booklet of coupons when we first arrived. It was only $30.00 a piece but, we got so much pleasure out of it. One of the coupons got us a boat trip to the bottom of the falls on the "Maid of the Mist". They give you rain ponchos when you board the boat but, trust me, they don't help much. We got wet! BUT, not as wet as we got the next day when we went to the "Cave of the Winds" which is a walking tour of the falls. Again, we were given rain ponchos and even water shoes. We were like little kids playing in the rain. We got drenched.
We were very surprised to see acres and acres of grapes when we entered New York and did not realize there were so many vinyards and wineries in the state. We spent Sunday afternoon touring wineries in the area. Some of the local wineries were doing a fall festival. We purchased a glass at the first one and then all of the tastings after that were free. Don't worry, we were sensible about it. Found some really good wines and found some really bad wines. It was a fun day.
By accident, we had lunch on the Canadian side one afternoon because Neil took a right turn when he should have taken a left turn. Seeing the falls from the Canadian side was incredible. The Canadian side is much more commercialized than the U.S. side. It is almost carnival atmosphere on the Canada side. We aren't partial, of course, but we liked the U.S. side better.
Yesterday, we toured the Old Fort Niagara. Some of the original building, circa the early 1700's are still there, some with walls 3 to 4ft thick. Pretty harsh conditions for those that fought here as it sits right on Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Niagara river.
Today we toured the power plant in Niagara Falls. They had a very informative presentation with a short video which gave the entire history of the plant and how it was built. Very interesting.
The leaves are starting to turn colors. In just one week since we arrived, the trees have changed. We are already seeing amazing colors. We are looking forward to our next stop in New Hampshire. We leave tomorrow morning to head that direction.
