Days 44 & 45
After what seemed like an eternity we entered the moonscape of the Atacama desert - dry to the point that nothing lives here and high enough (at 2800m) to be freezing all day round. San Pedro was a quaint township and a true oasis in the desert. Although clearly developed for tourism, with truly European prices for food and board, funnily enough the ATM is empty 6 days out of 7. Thank goodness for Visa.
We decided not to hang around here or do any day tours as the prices were crazy, so booked a tour that would take us across desert, into Bolivia and across the massive Uyuni salt flats.
After our dissapointment in the Pantanal we tried to do some research online (when the power in San Pedro was on) and decided "Estrella del Sur" had the fewest bad reviews. Upon seeing that our vehicle would be a relatively new Toyota Landcruiser, we handed over our US$100 each for a 3 day, 2 night journey to Uyuni. Cross your fingers.
