Hiking in the Franklin Mountains

Yea hah!

Ooh la la, ooh la la America!

Eager to move on from Mexico and drawn by the prospect of visiting some of America's great national parks we took a long overnight bus journey from Durango to Ciudad Juarez on the border with El Paso. En route we passed through Chihuahua and the desert lands of northern Mexico. Our luggage was twice searched by the army for weapons, a result of a government crackdown on the drug cartel war raging in the border areas in Mexico which has claimed over 900 lives so far in 2008.

We entered Tucson by way of a bridge over the Rio Grande and managed only a late lunch rather than a breakfast in America.

The city centre is relatively compact and very quiet - the heart ripped out by the development of out of town malls - quite a contrast to it's Mexican counterpart across the border. Had a good morning hike into the Franklin mountains situated on the outskirts of town.
