Five couples met at Massena in upstate New York at the Massena International Kampground. We enjoyed dinner under the tarps while renewing our friendships. This morning we packed up our trailers and started the convoy to Essex Junction. We decided to take the ferry across Lake Champlain. If the timing had been better, I’m sure all five rigs could have taken the same ferry. We split up and took two ferries to make the trek. It was pretty calm, but we were still getting queasy before we made it across.
We arrived at the Grand National Rally at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction just after noon. We had to wait in line because our American counter-parts had set up a mock customs station. It seems there has been a tradition of friendly teasing between New England and Canada. I think I am getting “”fined” for having Canadian beer on board (the jury is still out!). They assumed (and rightly so) that we would have either potatoes or beer from Canada.
There are going to be over 100 rigs arriving here. It seems well organized and everyone we have met has been friendly. Although given months of advance notice, they seem to be unable to cope with Glenna’s gluten allergy. Tonight’s dinner is lasagne, tomorrow night is Vermont beans and hot dogs. No alternative is available to Glenna. The good news however, we found a local grocery store well stocked with gluten free items. They had her favourite donuts.
The Canadian chapter got together for munchies and drinks. It was a nice way to unwind before returning to our rigs for a late supper.
