Pictograph on Agawa Rock at Lake Superior Provincial Park

Sloping rocks you have to walk on to see the pictographs

I slept in then had kind of an early lunch at a Tim Horton's in Wawa. After that, it was on to Lake Superior Provincial Park, which is a huge park. The Trans-Canada highway runs right through the park; entering the park, a sign notes "Lake Superior National Park next 83 km." The highlight of the park is the pictographs on Agawa Rock, painted by First Nations peoples (the Canadian preferred term for what we might call Native Americans) anywhere from 150 to 400 years ago. To get to the pictographs involves walking a short but rugged trail, and then out on some rocks which slope down right into Lake Superior--watch your footing!

After that it was on to Pancake Bay Provincial Park, a small park which has a very nice, sandy beach, and I walked in the lake a bit. The water was not too cold.

From there I drove to my hotel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, where I also had dinner--a prime rib buffet. My hotel room overlooks the St. Mary River, and I can see across to the United States.
