Sunset over the Pantanal

Hello all

Here is the latest:

We left Bonito and made our way to The Pantanal by a 4 hour coach journey. The Pantanal is the largest wetland area in the world covering 155,000 sq km. It floods during the wet season and submerges 80%. We are here in the dry season, but still, there are many areas covered in water. It is home to an abundance of wildlife and aquatic plants.

We started the afternoon with a swim in the river (with our guide) prior to fishing and to our horror observed caimans on the riverbank, literally 5 metres away!! Had we known the waters were infested with caimans and piranhas we would not have dared to swim!! However, apparently caimans are shy creatures and would not attack a human and the piranhas – well, apparently the same !!!!!

We spent the remainder of the afternoon fishing for piranhas on the river bank with a guide. We were quite taken aback when our guide had his finger lacerated by their teeth whilst attempting to take the hook out. However, we got our revenge that evening when we ate our catch !

The next day we went horse ridding which was most enjoyable as it allowed us to observe a whole array of wildlife a natural way. A jungle walk with our guide was equally as fascinating – as we stumbled across wild pigs (with their young) and snakes crossed our path…

The following day it was back on the coach again and we made our way to Corumba. Next stop Bolivia !
