August 6, 7 & 8 2008
Moving on from our family reunion in Idaho we went to Hill AFB Family Camp in Utah. Hill AFB is in the town or Roy and is about 20 miles north of Salt Lake City. This is the first military campground we have stayed at during this trip. As with most things we found it on the internet and the reviews were very good for this family camp. It was a good stop for us and we got to stock up using the commissary and the exchange. Plus various planes were flying overhead most days we were there, so we had our own air show.
Since we had a couple of open days we visited a couple of sights and also took the time to read and just relax. We visited the Golden Spike National Historic Site. This is the site where the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads met at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory. East and West were linked making the nation’s first transcontinental railroad. That was on May 10th 1869. John had wanted to see this place and I also enjoyed the day. They have a very interesting display of how the rail beds were cut and how the tracks were laid. There are two steam locomotives on display at the site where the last spike was set joining the two railroads.
The next day we went to Antelope Island State Park which is in the Great Salt Lake. I had heard this is a great place to visit, but we must be there at the wrong time of year. The lake was way way down from the picnic and visitors areas. The grass was very dry (it is hot out here) and there was not much wildlife to see. We did see pronghorns and a couple of buffalo, but not what was expected by the brochure. Maybe we just hit it the wrong time of year.
Next week we will be at Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. Talk to you then.
