Joe & Margret's Great Alaskan Adventure '08 travel blog

How was this day? Bittersweet, but we still had fun.

-

The highways to date, in no particular order:

1. TransCanada.

2. Alaskan.

3. Bennett..

4. Klondyke.

5. Dempster.

6. Top of the World.

7. Taylor.

8. Cassiar.

9. Glacier.

10. Caribou.

11. Gold.

12. Chilcotin.

And in Inuvik we drove to what would be the start of the Ice highway to Tuktoyuktuk.

-

Bittersweet, yes. Harry and Eva are beginning their trip back to Red Deer. They are going via Jasper where they will spend a couple of days, before traveling on home.

-

Margret and I are continuing on to Kamloops where we will spend a couple of weeks visiting family and friends.

-

How did we spend the last day together? Just as we have the last 64 or so, fullfilling, and enjoyable.

-

We were up around 7. The sky was blue. The start of a beautiful day. On the road to 100 mile house. This would be the end of our Great Northern Adventure as a 'team'.

-

The drive was spectacular! I could live in 100 Mile House. There are lots . of lakes, and marshes. Lots of bare land, and forests. Snow capped mountains in the distance.

-

As it was our last day together it Eva thought it was fitting that we did something special. So we stopped at the 100 Mile House visitor centre which has a very nice park on the edge of a small lake and marsh.

-

Eva brought out a blueberry pie, and ice-cream. Of course Harry wanted the pie heated. (So did I, but was to polite to ask.) Anyhow Harry with his usual gusto, took the pie into the visitor centre and had them heat it up in their microwave.

-

The weather of course co-operated. The sun was brightly shining, the birds even pitched in and were singing merrily in the back ground.

-

However soon it was time to go. After a few hugs and good byes we piled into our vehicles and pulled out.

-

Down the road a piece we passed a Legion. Resisted the temptation to go in and buy a few pull tabs.

-

Soon we came to a fork in the road. Highway 24 to the East, and the Caribou to the South.

-

As I looked in the rear view mirror & saw Harry and Eva turn right & fade from view, a thought came to mind, "it's been one heck of a adventure this journey of ours!"

-

I cannot reiterate enough how much Joie d'vivre that Harry & Eva added to the Journey. We couldn't have had better traveling companions. They will be missed on the remainder of our adventure. Harry for his 'happy go lucky' attitude, good jokes & great stories. Eva for her sense of humor, and sense of adventure & love of exploring the past.

-

I could not go without mentioning the love of my life. Margret also has a sense of humour and can tell the stories and jokes with the best of them. Her deep interest in the history of Canada is a joy to behold. She is responsible for the pictures you see on the blog. She took upwards of 1500 pictures to record our adventure. And it goes with out saying the meals she prepares while on the road are fantastic. And oh yes, she puts up with me! (Now that's a job.)

-

Me? I was just along for the ride.

-

If I had the talent and were to write a book of fiction, it would be science fiction. I would base the characters on the four of us. I would have a character with a dry sense of humour based on Harry, maybe give him pointed ears. I would have a doctor of philosophy who would persue wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline, based on Margret. I would have a historian maybe keeping a chronological record of events, based on Eva. I would have them fly off to the stars in search of..... well you know how it goes. My character? I would just be along for the ride.

-

This will be it for the blog for a couple of weeks while we visit in Kamloops. When we are on the road again, I will make some entries. (I hope you all will excuse me for any failings in grammer, and spelling!)

-

Over the period of two months we have visited many place, met many people, visited with fellow travelers & traveled many highways.

-

Margret and I have traveled all over the world. We have been to every province and territory. We have traveled to 22 States in the U.S. of A. But until you travel without time constraints, you cannot imagine how magnificent, how vast & spectacular our countries are. I urge you all to travel, it 'broadens your horizons.'

-

As we traveled down these highways together, I can't but reflect how the road of life is much the same. There are roads with potholes, roads of washboards. There are steep hills, there are roadblocks, there is construction. But you eventually come to great roads, smooth sailing. With out these impediments on the road of life as on our journey, it would be quite boring.

-

See ya down the Road....
