Chuck and Donna's Michigan Trip via Niagara Falls 2008 travel blog

So this is what these RV parks are like I have heard so much about. The park we stayed at last night north of Jacksonville was very nice. Pecan Park was decked out with all of the amenities. You should have seen this place – it was super clean, and had all of the “goodies” (50 amp, wi fi, a nice looking pool) and they even give you a place to dump your poo!! What more could you ask for. Seriously…this place was great – I decided I can definitely handle this RV tripping. Well…until the second night anyways. After visiting with my Aunt Joyce and Uncle Darrell and getting a later start than expected out of Matthews/Charlotte, we drove for what seemed like an eternity but was really only a an hour or so until we were in somewheresville outside of Winston Salem. The only park that showed up in the area or close for a good nights stay (afterwards I was shown by map that the bazillion circles that show up on the map for park sites are a GOOD thing…few circles, no good) was lovely Dan Nicholas Park. It looked like a nice state park, but unfortunately after taking 20 right turns, then 20 lefts, then jumping up, twisting around, and balancing on one foot with our hands on our head, we found Dan Nicholas Park. Along with our find, we also found that it had closed 30 minutes prior to us finding our good nights stay. All I can say is on the way, it was dark and kind of scary and I didn’t say anything at the time, but it seemed like if we passed one more corn field we might just happen on a 2 year old in the middle of the road named Gage or be led into a corn field by Isaac or Malachi. I’ll leave that up to you to Google if you aren’t a Steven King fan. So, with that said – we (with my head hanging out the door) navigated the bus back onto the dark road and were back on our way. No signs of life all the way back to the highway. This is where things get “blurry” for me. I sat behind the navigation seat and remember hearing “wrong turn”, “missed turn”, “turn around”, “not there”, “2 exits down”, “parking lot”…this is when I start realizing things could get very interesting. We find a strip plaza with a nice parking lot. Dad navigates around the building in the bus to check out the digs. All we see are a few kids doing the Friday night “kid” thing. Dad circles around and parks the bus behind the plaza (where the security light stays on all night). We proceed to settle down and get tucked in. I am sure a security guard, police officer, or maybe even the hoodlum kids we had seen earlier are going to come knocking at the door and tell us we have to leave (or if it’s the kids, they might just find fun in throwing some stones at us or something). Dad and Donna seemed to be content, so reading their signals (or lack thereof), I put AJ to bed with me and aside from the trucker who pulled up next to us to drop his trailer, things were rather quiet…until 0330 when I hear a loud high pitched alarm start. Oh great, they are coming for us. No, next thing I know Donna scrambles out of the room and starts looking for where the noise is coming from. I jump up and start putting my ear next to the smoke alarms, co2 monitor…nothing…it continues and we don’t know where its coming from. Turns out it was some gas alarm or something that is in the back of the bus. I guess it must have been detecting the methane from the bathroom!! Donna opened the exhaust fan, and we slept (sort of) until around 0630. I couldn’t wait to get out of there. The next night can only get better…
