We departed Gillette on Sunday morning and had a nice liesurely drive to Columbus, MT. Our friends Tom & MaryAnn had told us about a city park in Columbus that was right along the Yellowstone River. That is where we spent one night and the camping was free. Can't beat that. It had lots of trees and was not close to a major road or railroad track. Wonder of wonders. It was quiet and pleasant.
On Monday we drove the last short distance to Livingston, MT and settled in at the Rock Canyon RV Park again, also right along the banks of the Yellowstone River. We had pre-arranged for a float, fly fishing trip on Tuesday, the 8th, so spent the afternoon planning and getting our gear together.
Dave Handle picked us up at 7:30 on Tuesday, at the RV Park and off we went. We had really wanted to fish the Yellowstone but it was still running way too fast and was muddy and murkey. So Dave opted to take us to the Madison River, about 1 hours drive away. Along the way to the launch site we spotted a BLM campground called Red Mountain which was right on the banks of the Madison River. It had a camp host too. MMMMmmmm! As it turned out, this is where we stopped for lunch so we got a chance to check it out and it will definitely stay on our list of places to go.
The day's float was lots of fun and the weather was great. It was sunny and nice but not too hot. Dave said they refer to the Madison as 100 miles of riffle (I think that was the word he used). This river has no rapids and few shallows and is just flowing along with little ripples along the way. We caught a few small trout but not a lot. However, the trip was still a lot of fun and we learned some new fly fishing techniques. Now we just have to remember them.
While we were lunching Dave pointed out a new hatch of "bikkini flies". The Madison River is a popular one for the folks to float in inner tubes, and the cute young things in their bikkinis were having a lot of fun. Some of them even had a separate inner tube with a cooler tied to it so they could quench their thirst. They were having a blast. Hope they did not get too sunburned.
We returned home in the late afternoon to be greeted by one happy puppy. It is sure nice to be welcomed home so heartily. The next day we did our shopping and prepared to travel on to Anaconda where we will settle in until September 15.
