Arrival in the fort at Jaisalmer

Our room in the fort hotel

Some of the fort's inhabitants

The streets inside the fort

Our group just finished the adventure of a 22 hour train trip from New Delhi to Jaisalmer. It was a bit of adventure with too many cockroaches (small ones) and smelly bathrooms. Men came around selling coffe, tea, and chai to keep us going and fed us masala omlettes and rice with spicy vegetables. I had to wake up at 1 a.m. and move my bunk, because I was in someone else's space.

The train journey was worth the wait. Jaisalmer is a town inside of an ancient fortress, kind of like Sienna in Italy. We are staying in a hotel high in the fortress walls with a view of the surrounding plain. Our guide told us that the king has allowed the whole town to own property inside of the fortress, which I think dates back to the 1100s. Our room is fabulous, with a cool double-wooden door and wooden shutters.
