On the 2nd, we relaxed in the chilled atmosphere of Charlottetown and visited the province house and the Lieutenant-Governor's Mansion where we learned so much more about the history of PEI. Tommy Tucker sang for his supper and Darren definitely had to work for his in the evening as he ordered a MASSIVE lobster. Oh, and the lobster bib was so cute.
Impressions of PEI
• Anne of Green Gables is everywhere that the Confederation conference isn’t
• The people seemed to come out of nowhere to celebrate Canada Day – we don’t know where they hide as we have had our own private tour 2x today.
• It is so calm and peaceful; we read in the newspaper that escorted tours to NYC theatre are offered – escorted, as it would be a HUGE culture shock for folks here.
It was definitely interesting to find out that the Eastern part of PEI has a number of acadien settlements.
We left Charlottetown and headed for the ferry back to Nova Scotia. We met an 86 yr old war veteran who was only too happy to have a wee blether with tourists passing by. The ferry over was just great. The seas were calm and the weather gorgeous. We then visited Pictou which is where the Scots landed when they first came over all those ears back. The village is very Scottish indeed with tartan lampposts and lots of wee Scottish crafts boutiques. It reminded us very much of our trip around Scotland. Then it was New Glasgow before ending up in Antigonish. We enjoyed the late sun on the beach at acadien Po…and then nearly missed dinner as restaurants close so early (8:30)! Well certainly earlier than we are used to from Europe.
