| On Monday, February 28, 2005, at 3 PM Sinan's mother had a heart attack and died shortly later at the hospital. We were still in Mersin and immediately headed back to Iskenderun. 2 1/2 hours later we were greeted by 100+ mourners who had come to the house to assist in any way they can. I cannot convey the sadness and heartbreak. We did not stop as we drove home in silence. How thankful we are to Mahmut for allowing us to use his car. We were driving on fumes, litterly, as we pulled on the side street next to the house. Though it had been only 4 hours since his mother's death, Friends and Family had already convened. The sense of community and family is undescribable. Tears flowed and everyone shared in this sudden tragedy that was so unexpected. It was after midnight that I crawled into bed in the room I shared with Sinan's eldest Aunt (in her 80's). My cold was finally full blown, and even in this greif and sadness the family was concerned for me and took such good care of me. They wanted me to go to the ER...but I didn't want to disturb anyone. |
