Sun June 22 - 25– to Wawona in Yosemite
We left Columbia later than expected. We arrived in the valley of Yosemite and stopped for some photos before heading to our camping spot in Wawona. I’ve posted a few of the photos here. There was no cell phone or WiFi connections. We were lucky to see the tops of El Capitan and Half Dome. From Mon – Weds the fires in the area blocked the sun and the sky. The photos will show how hazy the sky was. Too bad that some of the visitors never did get to see the blue sky next to the white granite mountains. We had a great time riding our bikes everywhere. You can rent bikes within the park. I took a two hour “walk” with a professional photographer from the Ansel Adams Gallery. It was great. But unfortunately you will not see those photos. Basically the memory card for those photos was deleted. Sometimes I like the old days of film. I felt like a fisherman who returned home saying “you should have seen the one that got away.” We visited the giant sequoia grove in Mariposa – beautiful trees. It’s hard to believe that these giants have a root system only six feet deep!
Fred got us a camping spot back in the Yosemite Valley for our last night. This made it very easy for us to ride our bikes everywhere. Note: Stay only on the bike paths. Do not try to ride to Bridal Veil Falls on the road. Eat at the Curry Village Pizza. The best I think I’ve had, and good bartenders too. There is a movie shown at the Curry Village amphitheater about the history of that area. Since going up into the mountains on Tuesday wouldn’t be worth the trip due to the smoke, the kids decided they wanted to raft down the Merced River which runs the length of the Yosemite Valley floor. The water was freezing to say the least.
