Heading north towards the Guatamalan border we spent a few days in Santa Ana, the second largest city in El Salvador.
Apart from the cathedral and theatre in Parque Central there were no other buildings of architectural interest, the remainder of the city´s stock comprising low rise buildings arranged around fairly grubby streets in the usual grid pattern.
16km from the city (about an hour and a half ride on a ´chicken bus´!) is Lake Coatepeque, situated in the caldera of a former volcano. Unfortunately direct access to the lake shore is restricted to a few restaurants and a grubby, very small, public beach - due to the presence of luxury villas. These were a marked contrast to the basic accommodation of the locals adjoining the dusty access road.
