Up very early this morning to catch a flight to Calama for the start of the jeep trip through the deserts of northern Chile to Bolivia and the salt plains. By 10am we were in a bus heading for San Pedro de Atacama, our stop for the first couple of nights. After being dropped at our hotel for the day, Shona and I headed into the village for a recce and something to eat - had a fab meal at place called Bendito Desierto, would highly recommend it to anyone in SPdA.
In the afternoon, we piled back into our bus and headed for a trip to the Valle de Luna; back through the desert to the incredible red rock landscapes in the hills. The rock formations are stunning, simply the colours alone are breathtaking, before you even consider the shapes and the structures. We spent the afternoon wandering around various parts of the reserve, before climbing one of the hills to watch the sunset.
The sky over the hills was amazing; a bright indigo streak slowly worked its way across the landscape, paling to a rose pink/gold higher in the sky. A night when I just observed though, so I'm afraid you have to take my word for it that the colours changing was spectacular - the camera would never have done it justice anyway!
