Tuesday 10th June
Yay!! I survived the night and I never want to do it again.
And Shayne? Well he’s in his element. This is his first opportunity to do something as a family that even remotely resembles ‘camping.’ Popping up the top of the van, connecting the van to power..making sure we’re level ..ra ra ra all the blokey things that they love to do…☺. He even thinks we should do more of this at home. (yeah right!)
And Sara? Well, I’m not proud to say that I’m not really the best role model for her. With my, “What do you mean there’s no TV?” and “Why do I have to wear thongs in the shower?” and “What do you mean I can’t connect my laptop, iphone, mobile, ipod and camera?”
Now if I’m sounding just a tad spoit; I guess I am. But, just so you don’t think I’m a complete prude, you should know that I have spent my fair share of time in caravan parks – in fact I spent most of my teens living in caravan parks. So there. My reluctance stems not from not wanting to experience it – but having experienced it for many years because I’ve had to. Fun? Well I guess that’s a matter of opinion!
Shayne too, has spent time living in caravan parks growing up. However, he is far more positive about his experiences – maybe it’s a ‘boy’ thing!
As we‘ve been driving today, we noticed how many BMW’s and Mercedes there are on the road. They must give discounts to locals because everybody seems to drive one!
We have also stopped playing ‘punch buggy’ here in Germany because there are hundreds of them on the roads – mostly nice news ones, but a few oldies.
Today we drove to a small place called Fussen. Just outside of Fussen is the majestic Neuschwanstein Castle built by King Ludwig II. He was a rather eccentric King who had two obsessions; swans and Wagnerian operas. The castle reflects both of these obsessions throughout the whole castle, in wood-carvings, vases and it’s very own concert hall. Unfortunately the King died at the age of 40 in mysterious circumstances in a nearby lake, so he was only able to enjoy his castle for about 160 days. When he died, the castle was not completely finished and even today, the 3rd floor remains unfinished. Our tour around the castle was excellent; it was so huge. It’s hard to believe that one man could live alone in such grandeur!
Unfortunately we were not allowed to take photos inside.
