After we left the Wedding reception, we were fortunate enough to be chauffered by my brother to Cincinnati where we stayed at the Sheraton CVG Airport hotel- On May 25 (sunday) we were shuttled to the airport in just enough time to check in, go through the neccessary hassle of airport security check-in and board our flight which connected in Salt Lake City, Utah. We went to the gate only to realize the gate had been changed and raced to the correct gate and immediately boarded for the second half of our flight. Thank goodness for my ipod itouch and the abbility to download movies onto it- especially since our seats weren't even together!
Anyhow, we managed to get through the anxiety of flying and arrived at the airport in Kahalui, Maui around 2PM (8pm Lexington time). We got our rental car at the Hertz counter (the car rental was the only REAL hassle of our trip), a new Mustang Convertible and made a quick stop at Down to Earth Health Food Store by the airport for some groceries for the room (couldn't check in to the room until 3pm anyway)
Down to Earth (http://www.downtoearth.org/) is an AMAZING natural foods grocery with vitually the same prices we pay at home- if not, cheaper! The biggest bonus was their selection of locally grown organic produce. We stocked up on Pineapple, Mango,Papaya, bananas, avocado, & tomatoes. Delicious!!
We arrived at the condo shortly after 3 and were amazed at the beauty of the unit we were going to be calling home for the next 12 days. I kinda got teary-eyed. Our 2 private lanai's (balconies) wrapped around the condo. We were on the 5th floor, so you could imagine the spectacular view. We were ocean front- directly facing the neighboring island of Lana'i. To our right was the Lahaina Harbor where ships sailed in, out and around of and surfers rode the waves next door.In the early morning, it was low tide and you could see through the crystal clear water from the barstools on our lanai while eating breakfast. In the evening, it was high tide and when you were out on the lanai or had the sliding glass door open, you could hear the waves crashing against the shore and feel the cool ocean breeze.
Our condo was unit #501 at the Lahaina Shores Beach Resort. We booked directly through the owner's site (www.lahainasunsets.com)instead of through the resort itself. The unit had a seperate bedroom with plenty of storage space, a seperate entry onto the Lanai via a sliding glass door that made up the entire back wall, and a comfy (enough) king-sized bed. The kitchen, eating area and sitting area were open and made up of a fully equipped kitchen with refrigerator/freezer, stovetop, pots, pans, dishes, glasses, a blender, potholders, utensils, etc . There was a desk and internet hookup, though you had to pay seperately for IA. There was a table and chairs (we only used the ones on the lanai, though) and a couch and chairs in the sitting area along with a TV.
After somewhat settling in and changing clothes, we headed out to Front Street for a repeat of what we did the first night we were there last. First stop was The Blue Lagoon. (www.bluelagoonmaui.com) For a "sex in a palm tree"- a twist on the mixed drink, "sex on the beach". Next stop was Kimo's for a slice of Hula Pie(www.kimosmaui.com) - a concoction of cookie crust, macadamia nut ice cream, fudge, chocolate sauce, macadamia nuts, and whipped cream. We sat on the patio and enjoyed our Hula Pie and Mai Tai's while watching the sunset.
We were about done for the day- with over 10 hours of flying and the chaos of rental cars and room check-ins and unpacking... we headed back for a good night's rest in preparation for the rest of the vacation!
