From Vic, we had a 12 hr drive west then south into Botswana ready to go into the okavango delta, a water system that flows from angola, north of bots, south before dispersing into a series of channels. it takes 6 months though to flow down cos it is so flat, so when it is the wet season in angola it is stillvery low waters in the delta and the opposite in the dry season! anyway, enough geography/geology and on with the story....
we had i night at a campsite, our base for the delta, our driver from the last group was there, so had the night with him, our new driver is a non drinking veggie so he wasnt much fun! then the next day it was off to the dug out canoes for our delta trip, these things are so unstable in the water but iseing as the water was only about 20 cm deep i wasnt too worried about drowning! its like venice but not quite the same, as you have a poler on the back who 'poled' us to the camp site in the delta somewhere, couple of hours it took, through the reeds and grasses and flies and fish! our camp reallly was the ultimate bush camping, absolulely nothing there...we had to dig the toilet with a spade, then when that got full, dig another!
had the night round the campfire with beers and steak and jacket spuds home cooked on the coals! delicious! we had to take all of this stuff in ourselfs, we had one canoe just full of food and drinks!
the next day in the delta we did a walk to see the animals..the usual...giraffes, zebra, warthog, kudu but then one of the eagle eyed amongst us spotted it...the highlight so far..better than any of the big 5...a very rare species in these parts...no one could believe it, jaws dropped and everybody was silent...we had seen the lesser spotted tortoise! so we did the usual tortoise things...put it on its back and spun it! anyway..that was that and it was back to camp then for another night, was up early the next day then out of the delat the same way we came in!
the afternoon we came out i did a scenice flight over the delta which was really cool cos we followed the route we took in the canoes in the plane, the pilot though he was some sort of hero though, was taking the plane to its limits, trying to touch the tree tops! quite scary but good fun!
anyway, back to the bar, and who was there...the pilot! not quite sure how he made it back so quick! but never mind! so had the night with him and a couple of his friends in the bar! Next day we were out of that rice paddy on the road again heading north along the delta into namibia!......
