Geoff and Melissa on the Isla del Sol in Lake Titicaca

On the floating islands in Lake Titicaca

We had a great week in Copacabana, Bolivia where we chilled out in preparation for some full on travelling in the coming weeks!

One day we hiked up the mountain (more steps Jo!) next to the town and that had magnificent views back over the town of Copacabana and out over Lake Titicaca.

Another day we caught the ferry out to the Isla del Sol, the Island of the Sun. We had met two Americans the previous day who had been travelling around Peru and we caught the ferry with them and had a very interesting chat about birds, turtles and marine biology.

We were dropped off at the north of the island and we made our way to the south of the island, a 4 hour hike. Again, the views across the lake were amazing. The water was so clear and blue and the snow capped mountains in the background were stunning. The hike was great and it was nothing like hiking the Inca Trail although there were some gentle inclines! We made it to the south and met a great English couple Andy and Gillian. They were staying on the island for a few nights. We then caught the afternoon ferry back to Copacabana where we found yet another cheap place to eat!

The next evening we met up with Andy and Gillian again at a great little bar. We chatted for ages, and they are definitely people we will keep in touch with. They lived in NZ for 8 months and loved it and are now on their way back to London (via a load of places!) where I am sure we will see them in November!

Yesterday we caught the bus back to Puno which went really smoothly – no problems at the border at all. We checked back into our hotel that we stayed in when we came through Puno the first time and then organised to go out to the floating islands in the late afternoon. Uros Island was so cool. It was a 25 minute boat ride out and then there were all these little island made out of reeds! It was really soft under foot and very mushy! Hard to describe so have a look at the photos on the web album to get a better idea!

Flying to Lima this afternoon then onto Quito tomorrow before starting our Galapagos Islands tour on the 4th of June. We are also meeting Bruce and Alison in Quito for dinner from our Peru tour as they are just finishing their Galapagos tour as we arrive in Quito!
