Off the Bus on Highway to Hluhluwe & Game Reserve
| Up early and to highway by 6:30 - bang - got a minibus right off and into town by 7!! The 1st bus to Durban was just beginning to fill (20 passengers in all and NO more). It finally left at 9:30!! All in all, it was a fine ride, no crowding, easy border crossing into S.Afr. no cost visa for 3 mos. Roads are smooth, 2 laners - in S.Afr. wide shoulder, speed limit 80 mph. We paid full price for just half the ride to Durban fut its the cheapest, most practical way. We looked into Baz Bus but you can only go when it comes your direction, only to certain hostels/BPer locations - about every 3rd day 0- & anly at the times it leaves/arrives - no flexibility and no cost savings! Anyway, bus dropped us 3 km from Isinkwe BPers Bush Camp off highway N2. A pleasant walk on a sandy road midday not too hot, a breeze even. Chkd into BPer dorm for 5 which they promised to leave just for us 3! Plus, we opted for their "Stay 2 nites, get 3rd one free". Signed up for a safari day after tomorrow in the Game Reserve. Food is a bit pricey but since we had no way to change $$ beforehand, the owner took us to the ATM at the 'Petroport'(gas station) and we bought some food there as well. 5-24 Tripped next door to Zulu Cultural Village and took in the show plus a snake & croc park. All very informative, spent most of the day there returning to discover that tomorrow instead of just us 3 and 2 other girls it will be a full carload of 10!! 5-25 Up at 5 and out to Reserve by 6, the first ones into the park at first light! A Scottish fellow who just got his guiding license last year – David – led us thru this park created in 1895 when it was purchased from the Zulu. It had been almost totally depleted of game by then being the primary Zulu hunting grounds (see list). Got rained on 3 times heavily…back past 6 pm David having exhausted all possible avenues at locating a leopard for Bonnie! I had been a bit sick lately and a bit puzzled by a bite that wouldn’t heal…David cleared up the mystery because he was recovering from 12 days of the same – a tick bite!! |
