The second of 3 consecutive driving days with limited mileage but with plenty of interesting stops. first off, we drove just a few kms down the road to a most fabulous Mayan site. I thought I had been "Mayand out" by now but and hour and a half looking around the excellently excavated and restored site at Palenque was a stunning experience. Then off again (theres never enought time in a rally) for another 50 kms and a stop at a waterfall. I say "a water fall2 - there were a whole series of them cascading down to a series of rock pools with thousands of gallons of water falling every minute. Jenny swam in the upper lagoon whilst I chose to swim a few hundred metres down stream at the calmer pool at the bottom which was a cooling and thus extremely refreshing experience. A long dash of nearly 200 kms to San Cristobal de Las Casas to have a quick look around this historical town and then we took the recently built highway to our hotel in Chiapas.
We needed to be there by 4 o´clock to catch the pre arranged boat trip. we arrived at 3.45 to be told we were only the 6th car to have completed the journey but we had just 10 minutes to have a shower and present ourselves for the boat ride, which we did.
A two hour trip in very fast motor launch up stream on the river Grijalva. We went under the Tuxtla bridge and then through the Sumidero Canyon where the walls towering above us on eitehr side were an incredible 1 kilometre high (3000 feet). We saw crocodiles (including baby crocs), monkeys and vultures! Back to the hotel for a longer shower and then out to dinner with Rick and diana Dyke Price where we found that most places were closed so we stopepd at a cruffy cafe in the market area and surprisingly were presented with the best quality steak we had had on the whole trip.
