View from hotel room in Caen

After driving all day, visiting many sites and suffering from sheer exhaustion, we were glad that we had made the reservation earlier that morning for the Hotel Mercure Caen Centre Port de Plaisance. This is a mid range Accor Hotel but is listed as at least 3-4 stars. More a 3 star but really a wonderful location overlooking the harbor, we had a large room with sitting area, immaculate bathroom (always tops on my hit parade) refrigerator, TV with BBC and wifi (not cheap). Underground parking is available if you want to shell out 9 Euro (we did) and breakfast in the morning, typical European spread with lots of fruit, yogurt, cereal, eggs, bread, meat, cheese and great coffee. Need I say more?

Of course, when we checked in we knew we were looking really tired when the youngish desk clerk timidly asked if either of us were over 55 because, if so, he could not only give us a room discount but a free breakfast for one person. Of course, we accepted that rate.....legally. They must consider 55 a retiree age not 65 like the US.

Parking is very tight in this area as we witnessed cars that were literally bumper to bumper with no space in between, parked up on the sidewalks. We decided that either they must have been lifted into place or the drivers were top in their driver's education classes with the highest marks for parallel parking. Sail boats bobbed in the harbor and two elderly gentlemen (probably only 55) sat in the early morning sun as we left the next morning.

Unfortunately, our plans to visit at least one cathedral and several other sites in Caen were cut short because we just could not drag out of bed early and we got a late start, leaving the hotel about 1100. We were on a special mission to get to our next stop, Lisieux, so we just blew off the site seeing in Caen and drove on to get to a special location.
