Semester at Sea 'Spring 2008' travel blog

We arrived in Puntarenas, Costa Rica early in the morning and as soon as we got off the ship found a taxi to take us to the ferry in order to get to the small town called Montezuma. Most people who were looking to party went to the town Joco but we decided that it would be much more pleasurable and memorable to go to a small town away from most of the SAS students. So we boarded the ferry right in time and it took about an hour to get across to the other side. When we arrived we hired two cab drivers to drive us another hour to the town. Unfortunately, there were very few ATM’s so we had to stop by a couple because our cards weren’t working. Finally, we went to a bank and had to forward money from our debit/credit cards which worked out perfectly. We had previously looked in the Costa Rica Lonely Planet so we had planned the hotel that we wanted to stay in. I was travelling with Stacy, Lanae, Berrit, Lauren, Chelsea, and Dave. When we arrived we checked into the hotel, got two rooms, and then went to walk around town for a little while. Our hotel was incredibly lush with wild flowers and palm trees everywhere we looked. It was almost as though we were walking through the jungle to get to our rooms. We found a café called Organics: Pure Food With Love which served solely vegan/vegetarian food which was all organic. I ordered a Thai Spicy Burger with pineapple, cheese, and homemade whole grain bread with a side salad, an amazing smoothie, and topped everything off with a vegan brownie with homemade blackberry sorbet. Everything was incredible and it was definitely the best vegan food I have ever eaten. It was so unexpected in this small town to find such amazing food. However, the town is filled with hippies and I was aware of this before we came. After eating, we walked around town and checked out all of the vendors stands which had hand-made jewelry which was really cool. After checking out the town, we all went to the beach and Lanae, Lauren and I played in the ocean for a couple of hours. The ocean was the perfect temperature with perfect waves which were so much fun to play in. We all talked in the ocean and it was one of those simple moments which will stay in my heart forever. We also met two guys who were from New York and laid our eyes upon the most beautiful man. All of us looked at him at the same moment with his ripped body and beautiful long hair and time literally stopped. It was so funny because it happened to all of us, and then we couldn’t remember how much time had actually gone by so hopefully it wasn’t too awkward. After that, we all took some pictures and then went back to our room to get ready. Chelsea and Dave had gone hiking so it was just us girls hanging out all day together. We all got dressed and then went out and bought some beer so we could play King’s Cup before we went to dinner. We had the greatest time ever and I have never laughed so much in one night. It was also really funny because at our hotel we weren’t able to flush toilet paper down the toilets because of the weak pipes, so whenever we had to go to the bathroom we ended up going to the lobby bathroom so our room wouldn’t stink. After playing the game for about an hour and a half, we went to a restaurant located down the street (the whole town is only a couple of blocks). We all ordered delicious food and had a great conversation throughout dinner. The restaurant was all outside with a thatched roof which made a beautiful, intimate setting where we all felt as though we were in paradise. It was really funny too because there was a couple eating dinner together and they didn’t say one word throughout their whole meal (hopefully it was just a bad first date and they weren’t actually together). After eating dinner, we walked down the street to the one bar in town and ordered some shots so we could all celebrate our last night together. We danced quite a bit and it started pouring rain which was kind of cool. We met some guys from Canada and talked to them for awhile. Around 2am or so we all went back to the hotel and passed out. It was really funny though, because there were some really interesting/weird noises right outside our room which sounded like a goat but then Lauren just said it was a piece of wood for some odd reason and we all laughed for awhile because it was such an awkward/random noise.
