Nevada State Capitol Building, Carson City, NV

Almost everything I saw today was covered with snow. The mountains were white, and the lakes were mostly frozen over. Only the highways were clear, which was somewhat of a relief. The brilliant blue sky was a perfect backdrop to the snow white landscape.

I climbed higher into the mountains, to 7,000 and then more than 8,000 feet, after leaving Bishop and stopped to check out the Mammoth Lakes ski resort. One of my favorite areas was June Lake, and I can only imagine how beautiful the lake would be in the summer and fall.

Mono Lake was the only lake that was not frozen, but the surrounding roads were snowed in, so I couldn’t get too close.

I stopped in Genoa, Nevada, a charming 19th century town on the outskirts of Carson City. Genoa is the oldest settlement in Nevada and has a great collection of historic buildings.

Carson City, Nevada’s capital, was my destination for the evening, and I toured the town on this sleepy Sunday. The silver-domed capitol building is now the newest addition to my collection of state capital photographs.
