Woke up early and went to the port in pouring rain. The hydrofoils down the Yangtze no longer start from Chongqing so it was 3 hours or so on a bus to Wanzhou. The rain stopped and the drive was quite pleasant through rice fields and over an 800 metre pass.
Eventually got on the hydrofoil which doesn't stop at the tourist sights like temples and such but gets you through the gorges in 1 day instead of spending a couple of nights on a boat. It's a travel bargain at about A$45 (less than twenty quid). The gorges are certainly impressive and there's always something pleasant about floating down a river. There are some lesser gorges as well which the 3-day trips go to, but in my opinion it is possible to gorge oneself on gorgeous gorges.
