well we arrived today at 2:00 pm thursday! When we landed it was very surreal...We flew in it is virtually this city in the middle of a desert. and a loud one at that. Apparently, according to the NY Times, Cairo was just voted the noisiest city in the world. And, I believe it. It's chaotic, and surprisingly the few kids that have been here before say it's more tame than in prior years. They spell it as "Kairo" here too. One thing i noticed upon driving into the city when first leaving the airport was the abundance of greenery that i was not anticipating. I asked Prof Denis's daughter, Grace, about it, and she said that is a new application to the municipality, that apparently that is going towards tourist efforts. Our hotel, Flamenco, is on an island in the middle of the Nile called Zamalek Island. It's awesome. We got put in room 911...easy to remember i guess! Our triple is like double the size of everyone else's rooms...but the beds literally are just wood with like some padding. We had a tour this evening of the area around where we are staying. Cats run astray EVERYWHERE here. and soccer is ALWAYS playing on every TV set. if all goes as planned we'll hopefully fit in time to go to a game while we're here. Tomorrow we are riding on camels to the Giza pyramids! i'm so excited.
Time for bed, more tomorrow!!
