Dear FRiends,
Just a reminder; when replying to us, please use kandiewag@msn.com as we have trouble picking up other emails. We love to hear from you, so please keep in touch. We are just outside Petra with a day trip planned for tomorrow for entire day. Had a 9 hour driving day today after leaving Mt. Nebo where we bush camped on top with high winds and rocky cliffs. Really enjoyed Moses memorial church which is a very spiritual place. Yesterday we swam in the Dead sea or we should say floated on top! Then packed mud on our bodies to get that benefit as well. It was so hot that the water in my water bottle was hotter than any shower I have had on this trip. After two days in Damascus with big city adventures which included a visit to souks, mosque where John the Baptist head is buried! and Azem Palace, with a visit to Palymyra prior to that, we headed to Krak de Chevaliers a castle on top of mountain. MInor details included Kandie falling out of truck, putting up tent in gale force winds, sleeping with camels and stray dogs and a bunch of other things, we then headed for border crossing into JOrdan. There we went to Jerash, another Roman ruin. We canceled trip to Beruit because of another boom boom this time gun fire at place we were going to. We had already had a problem with one passenger forgetting her passport, going back, then going back again and then gunfire, so whole day was a bust except for bus driver who got $10 each just for all the turn arounds. Regarding ruins, when we arrived here today at our first hotel in a few days, we were ushered to a half built building and told to go down five floors. One of our passengers thought they said they were good ruins rather than good rooms. Turned out they were good rooms with lukewarm showers and flushing toilets although no sheets on bed and no towels, but we were first inhabitants, so we are happy. Everybody is getting cranky after all these days of camping and crawling around in the desert.
We love Mt. Nebo where Moses saw the promise land and then died. We haven't died yet but felt like our tent was going to take off in the high winds from top of Mountain. Saw city lights over the JOrdan valley and Bethlehem. So much history here we can hardly comprehend it all and really felt moved by the deep spiritual feeling in the church which is a memorial to Moses.
Looking forward to Petra trip tomorrow and then on to Dahab, Egypt for three days which is on Red Sea and includes snorkeling and diving plus a lot of loud music from other tour groups who seem to be traveling with us. Kandie and I are getting quite a reputation for our giggling and carrying on with all of this camping business.
but we love all that we are seeing and experiencing even though the accommodations leave a lot to be desired. Oh well.
LovE, Kandie and Gail
