Wednesday April 9th – the flight from Quito to the island of Baltra was uneventful. The Galapagos are about 1000km off the coast of Ecuador. However, as we got off the plane it was like entering a sauna – hot and very humid. We took a short bus ride, a 5minute ferry ride and then a 45 minute bus ride to Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island. Then the last leg was a zodiac out to the boat, the Lobo del Mar (Sea Wolf). About 70 feet long with 8 double cabins, dining room and a nice lounge and plenty of deck space.
After putting our bags in our cabin we went back onshore to visit the Charles Darwin Research Station.
We saw Lone some George, a 90 year old tortoise who is the only surviving male member of his species. Attempts to get him interested in females of other species have not succeeded! We also saw baby tortoises who are incubated in the station and the reared for up to 4 years before they are released back into the wild. Also many iguanas lazing in the sun. Temperature was 39 Celsius.
Walking back into town and looking at the various shops the only thing we bought was a tea-towel! This was to wrap around my head underneath my baseball hat to create Foreign Legion style kepi!! This both soaked up the perspiration and provide some protection against the sun
