We took the bus to the coastal town of Barahona yesterday and are staying at a small hotel called Casa Blanca for only $30.00 per night. Its perched on top of a cliff with an amazing view of the Caribbean Sea and is run by an eccentric Swiss lady that may be obsessed with the movie Casablanca. Its very laid back and the owner, Susanna, used to produce a cooking magazing back in Europe. Cooking is her passion and she´s been cooking us amazing 4 course meals such as fish and coconut soup for the main course and fresh papaya with lime juice and wild mountain honey drizzled on top for dessert! She doesn't freeze anything and goes to the market everyday to buy fresh ingredients.
Today we took a boat tour to a remote part of the country in the far south to the most pristine beach and unspoiled beach called Bahai de las Aquilas. It was miles of white sand beach with not a single other tourist in sight and absolutely no development or infrastructure. We also visited a cave to see Taino cave drawings. The Taino people were indigenous to the island from AD 900 until 1492 when Columbus arrived with the Spanish and brought disease, slavery and genocide to the Tainos.
